נשיא איראן מסעוד פזשכיאן הציג בפני הפרלמנט את מועמדותו של מהרדאד אח'לאקי כתאבצ'י לתפקיד שר ההגנה וסגן הכוחות המזוינים. כתאבצ'י, שצמח בתעשיות הטילים והחלל של איראן, נכלל בעבר ברשימות סנקציות בינלאומיות.
